Summary

This position is located in the Research and Scholars Department of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The incumbent serves as Program Specialist, Research and Scholars Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum. The purpose of the position is to provide key programmatic support for several of the Center’s highest visibility scholarly and academic programs, including the museum’s American Art journal; the museum’s Fellowship Program and its publication prize awards.

Duties

Help

  • Provides peer review and production support to Executive Editor, American Art.

  • Copies edits manuscripts for overall structure as well as correctness of style, format, grammar, and spelling within an art historical context; and crosschecks one part of the manuscript against other parts to ensure consistency in spelling and wording of names, titles, and other data.
  • Coordinates rights and reproductions for journal.
  • Organizes logistics and helps prepare fellows’ workshops, seminars and conferences and provides staffing support at events.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as activities with American art history; implementing the principles of effective editing; copyright issues; organizing information and processes; and software such as spreadsheets and databases.  

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

  • Knowledge of and experience implementing the principles of effective editing.

  • Ability to use software such as spreadsheets and databases.
