Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of U.S. Border Patrol will allow you to use your expertise to support Border Patrol Agents with humanitarian care and intake processing of detainees and provide other clerical/administrative support to agents and other Agency personnel. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen Homeland Security by providing expert technical assistance to contacts in and outside of Homeland Security. This position starts at a salary of $35,265.00 (GS-05, Step 1) to $51,103.00 (GS-06, Step 10) with promotion potential to $51,103.00 (GS-6, Step 10).


As a Border Patrol Processing Coordinator, your duties will include:
  • Receiving and processing custody of detainees; maintaining well-being of detainees outside of a secure complex; inventorying, tagging and storing detainees' personal property for tracking purposes;
  • Transporting detainees to proceedings and medical facilities, which may require operating a passenger shuttle bus;
  • Communicating in the Spanish language; maintaining contact with other sectors, stations, agencies and foreign consulates and making arrangements for removal procedures, travel and escorts;
  • Logging the status of welfare checks of occupants, visual inspections of temporary holding areas and inputting information into the appropriate processing system;
  • Drafting and maintaining administrative paperwork and reports related to property, transportation, and deportation documentation.

Qualifications

Experience:

You qualify for the GS-05 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Utilizing standard computer tools including Microsoft Office to create basic reports, spreadsheets and presentations;
  • Assisting in applying policies and practices to safely and legally manage stressful situations and make sound decisions when dealing with tight deadlines or hostile or violent individuals;
  • Maintaining sensitive personal information while assisting with daily assignments including answering incoming calls for information;
  • Communicating orally and/or in writing to respond to routine requests for basic information.

You qualify for the GS-06 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
  • Utilizing computer systems to analyze data, complete administrative reports and maintain logs by inputting information regarding file transfers, welfare checks and arrest information;
  • Assessing situations and applying training to manage hostile and dangerous situations;
  • Utilizing processing systems to document custody of individuals including inventorying and storing property and currency;
  • Independently responding to requests for information and composing written reports, information papers, policies/procedures, and other complete documents.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education Substitution:

GS-05:
Successful completion of a full four-year course of study above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite can be substituted for specialized experience. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45-quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Combining Experience and Education:

To combine your education and experience, you must convert each to a percentage, and then add the percentages. If your education is currently described in quarter hours, multiply by the fraction 2/3 to convert into semester hours then divide the semester hours by 18. To determine your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total months of qualifying experience by the required number of months of qualifying experience. Add your percentages together. The total must equal at least 100% in order to qualify.

Education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency wavier by meeting one or more of the following conditions:
  • Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
  • A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government

  • Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government

Trial Period: The first year of service of a term employee is a trial period to determine fitness for continued employment. Prior Federal civilian service may be credited towards completion of the required trial period

FLETC Medical Training Screening: It is the policy of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) that all students scheduled to participate in training-related physical activity, be sufficiently physically qualified so as not to present an undue risk to the health and safety of themselves and others. Furthermore, it is the policy of the FLETC that all students scheduled to participate in, or participating in training-related physical activity shall receive medical screening prior to engaging in such activity and as necessary during the course of training, this normally occurs during the first day of the training program. Students who, as a result of medical screening, are found to have medical conditions that might create a health or safety risk to themselves or others will be referred to the FLETC Medical Officer for consultation. If a determination is made that a selectee is unable to safely participate in the FLETC training program following entering on duty, the student may be assigned/reassigned or detailed to an alternate duty location, regardless of the preferred location selected at the time of application, for initial training and/or completion of the term of service outlined in the vacancy announcement.

Formal Training: You will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately 7 weeks.

Physical Requirement:This position has physical requirements. You must certify in your application assessment that you meet the physical standards of the position. Firearms Requirement:During the performance of some duties, you may be required to carry a firearm. Anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C. Section 922 (g) (9)). Candidates will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense.

Work Environment: Work involves moderate risk depending on current assignment or discomfort that may require special safety precautions. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear.

Shift Work: You will be required to perform work on a shift and rotational basis.

Overtime: Overtime will not be regularly scheduled; however, you must be available to work overtime on an unscheduled basis in excess of the 40-hour work week.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
