Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to provide support for research projects addressing 1) the seedling ecology of perennial grasses and shrubs, and 2) sustainable and science-based management of sagebrush steppe plant communities. You will participate in analyzing data in preparation for publication, developing written materials for inclusion in scientific manuscripts, development of decision support tools, and technology transfer.

Duties

Help
  • Assist in the design of hypothesis-driven research to a) link environmental factors with development and establishment of perennial grass/shrub seedlings, and b) develop improved strategies for managing the sagebrush steppe ecosystem.
  • In close cooperation with lead scientist, is responsible for field/lab implementation, data collection, data analysis, and written reporting of material pertaining to seedling ecology and sagebrush steppe ecology research.
  • Distributes technology transfer products to the appropriate federal, state,, and regional officials, including NRCS, BLM, USFWS, USFS, ODFW, NGOs, universities, extension groups, and producers.
  • Actively participates in location outreach program.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time in grade: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade (e.g. one year at the GS-09 grade level for consideration for the GS-11 grade level.).

Basic Requirements
Degree: Range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows: Range Management -- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences -- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.Related Resource Management Studies -- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management.
OR
Combination of education and experience: at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

GS-09
Specialized Experience: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting a plant ecology research project; utilizing statistical analysis software packages; and distributing technology transfer products.
OR
Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include: Degrees with an emphasis in rangeland, plant, soil, or restoration sciences. Degree titles vary by institution but could include: Ecology, Plant ecology, Soils, Land Reclamation, Weed Science, Range Science, Rangeland Ecology, Rangeland Resources, Rangeland Management, Rangeland Science, Botany, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Conservation Science, Ecosystem Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Science, Forestry, Natural Resources (except fisheries and oceanography), and Agronomy.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.

GS-11
Specialized Experience: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting a plant ecology research project; utilizing statistical analysis software packages; distributing technology transfer products; and evidence of ability to write peer-reviewed articles.
OR
Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related Degrees may include: Degrees with an emphasis in rangeland, plant, soil, or restoration sciences. Degree titles vary by institution but could include: Ecology, Plant ecology, Soils, Land Reclamation, Weed Science, Range Science, Rangeland Ecology, Rangeland Resources, Rangeland Management, Rangeland Science, Botany, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Conservation Science, Ecosystem Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Science, Forestry, Natural Resources (except fisheries and oceanography), and Agronomy.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.
