Duties

Help
  • Provide independent and collaborative specialty, comprehensive and therapeutic health care services, integrating the art and science of nursing into medical practice.
  • Assess acute, non-acute and chronic clinical and psychological diagnosis for initiation of a therapeutic plan if care.
  • Provide educational management to patients and their families regarding disease processes and diagnostic tests.
  • Present patient cases and classes for patient care conferences in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
  • Develop, review, and appropriately update policies, protocols, and standards within nursing practice in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Format a therapeutic plan of care in collaboration with specialty physicians.

  • Term Positions: One year trial/probationary period may be required.

  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. Certifying organization varies on location. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • May include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
  • Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse (Family Practice):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Positions: A graduate or higher level Family Nurse Practitioner degree from an accredited educational program .

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must possess licensure or registration by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: At least one full year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-12. Professional Nursing Experience is defined as: ordering and interpreting lab results, diagnosing diseases, and prescribing medications.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

The Act directed the DHA to take responsibility for the administration (i.e., authority, direction, and control) of military treatment facilities beginning 1 Oct 18. Employees will become DoD employees upon transfer to the DHA.
