Summary

The incumbent performs field collection and laboratory analysis to characterize structure and/or functional components of various biological samples from agricultural environments, including soils, aquatic plant material, algae, invertebrates, and fish.
Current permanent Federal employees with competitive status, Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act, CTAP/RPL/ICTAP and VEOA/VRA eligible, Farm Service Agency permanent county employees; reinstatement eligible; Individuals with Disabilities; certain military spouses; 30% or more disabled veterans; former Peace Corps or VISTA volunteers and those eligible for other Special Hiring Authorities.
Performs field collection and laboratory analysis of water quality samples.
Evaluates nutrient cycling and retention in freshwater agroecosystems and responses of ecological structure and function to environmental gradients associated with nutrients, sediments and other agricultural stressors.
Evaluates effectiveness of local and watershed scale best management practices on improving water quality as measured by ecological and biogeochemical indicators in freshwater agroecosystems.
Collects and analyzes data to estimate nutrient flux rates from inundated agricultural soils or sediments from aquatic ecosystems using both laboratory incubations and field in situ methods.
Maintains and operates laboratory analytical equipment including membrane inlet mass spectrometers, nutrient auto-analyzers, and fluorometers.
Searches literature in the area of research for new procedures or techniques to use in experiments and field studies.

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of 1 year of graduate-level education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field directly related to the duties of the position. Related degrees may include: Aquatic Biology, Limnology, Wetland Ecology, Biogeochemistry, or other related biological sciences that emphasize research in aquatic environments.
OR
Completion of a a bachelor's degree, with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.).
Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
