Duties

Help
  • Serve as a Meteorologist in a developmental capacity, receiving recurring training and gaining experience to assume higher level duties with progress to the full performance GS-12 grade level.
  • Issue simple adaptive or amended forecasts and weather warnings under established guidelines when criteria are met and direct supervision is not available.
  • Take, record, and archive surface and upper-air weather observations.
  • Disseminate various meteorological information (forecasts, observations, warnings, climatology, mission weather data, etc.) to both the general public and to range projects and user groups via various media and in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the impact prediction of less complex rocket systems while assisting only in the minor functions of the impact prediction for the more complex sounding rocket systems.
  • Participate in scientific and/or computer studies programs to improve operational meteorological programs and techniques used to support the missile range.

  • This is an Army Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Workforce position.
  • Certification at Level I in the Acquisition Career Field Test and Evaluation within 24 months of entrance on duty; will have an additional 12 months , up to a total of 36 months. Information may be found at https://asc.army.mil/.
  • Incumbent may be required to work shift work or variable hours to meet mission support requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Note: Some positions can be designated Critical-Sensitive (3) requiring a Top Secret security clearance or Special-Sensitive (4) Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Access (SCI) and personnel must pass drug screening prior

  • This position requires use of protective clothing or equipment as authorized by the WSMR Safety Office.

  • This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions including seasonally hot or cold temperatures and inclimate weather
  • This position requires TDY up to 15%.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Meteorologist - 1340 (Transcripts required at time of application):

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:
1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
a. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
b. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
c. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
d. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.

2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.

* There is a prerequisite or co-requisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying basic knowledge of meteorological instrumentation, observation methods, and data collection such as balloon radiosondes, lidars or wind profilers, anemometers, barometers or temperature sensors. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement: In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR(3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/(https://www.achsnatl.org/)).ORCombination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
