Duties

Help

  • Provides vision and leadership for the representation of women’s experiences at the Smithsonian and through directing the American Women’s History Initiative, advising the Secretary, Under Secretary for Museums & Culture and other officials, and collaborating with colleagues in and beyond the Smithsonian; and strategically implements scholarly, digital, and educational activities that realize that vision.
  • Advises and consults with the Under Secretary for Museums & Culture and other appropriate senior management officials, including museum directors and Smithsonian digital leads, on pan-Institutional programs and issues that relate to and can facilitate the inclusion of AWHI programmatic goals and objectives, especially in the representation of U. S. women and their history and culture.
  • Oversees the initiative’s planning, development, and management. Sets, reviews, and executes annual and out-year budgets and determines appropriate staffing within approved budgets.
  • Performs the full range of supervisory duties for direct reports, and dotted line supervision of AWHI curators hired throughout the institution.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade X level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as researching, collecting, and exhibiting material culture related to American women’s history via products such as scholarly articles, teaching, lectures, oral histories, archival holdings, museum collections, exhibitions, digital engagement, and/or public programming; directing the development of policy and program initiatives; advising senior leaderships in areas related to planning, initiatives, issues, futures and policies; and interpreting and directing corrective actions for programs and directing the development of studies.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Skilled in establishing, evaluating and modifying program mission revolving around large organizational goals, visitor needs, and with execution that requires reporting and non-reporting units to coordinate and develop solutions that, in some instances, will require stretching beyond incremental knowledge and processes to generate innovative approaches that can effectively meet strategic institutional priorities and challenges.

  2. Knowledge of emerging trends in women’s history, education and/or virtual access programs and organizational mastery to use new knowledge to plan, execute, evaluate strategic change management.

  3. Knowledge of leadership issues in large, complex education and research organization.

  4. Skilled in administration and supervision of staff organized in separate units.
