Our 18-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit is seeking to expand our cadre of Advanced Practice Providers. Our APPs work under the supervision of critical care intensivists, in conjunction with junior level surgical residents to provide 24-hour care, seven days a week for all critically ill surgical patients.

Patient evaluation including clinical history, physical examination, and ordering of standard laboratory and radiographic studies
Any standard tests within the diagnostic battery of General Surgery.
Order indicated pre-evaluation antibiotics, to be administered as clinically indicated either orally, intra muscularly, or intravenously.
Schedule clinic appointments for patients to be seen in consultation at the request of the other services and arrange follow-up treatment as indicated for such patients by entering appropriate orders in the clinical record.
Assist managing physician or residents working on the same team in evaluation and management of outpatient clinic patients.
Order routine tests, lab work, x-rays, ECG's, or special diagnostic tests to do workup of clinic patients.
Recommend clinic appointments and consults. This is important in the follow-up of General Surgery patients who need to be seen in clinic for care before and after treatment and diagnosis. The PA is delegated authority to make arrangements for admission of patients with general surgical problems.
Write prescriptions for routine General Surgery supplies that patient needs for home care, such as dressing supplies, etc.
Write prescriptions for routine medications for outpatients followed in the General Surgery Clinic.
Prescriptions for controlled substances and restricted medications must be countersigned by a physician.
Incision and drainage of wounds
Wound debridement
Chest tube management
Removal of indwelling catheters
General wound care
Proctoscopies
Maintain the operating room schedule and daily posting in consultation with the chief resident and the staff.
Facilitate communication scheduling and work up with the pre-op medicine and pre-operative clinic.
Maintain continuity of care of the general surgical patient.
Perform admission history and physical examinations. Construct problem lists, provide assessment and plan for treatment, write progress notes, and fill out consults.
May write in-patient routine medications and have orders countersigned by physician within 24 hours.
Order appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, ECG's, or diagnostic tests to complete evaluation of database and to follow diagnostic leads.
Expedite requests for consultations and special tests, and studies when appropriate.
Dictate or write notes on all procedures in which PA is involved in or performs.
Change dressings and Foley catheters. Perform appropriate parts of General Surgery specialty patient examinations.
Provide education and counseling of the patient and family in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed
treatments, medications or procedures.

Removal of chest tubes
Placement of arterial lines
Proctoscopies, anoscopies
Assist in positioning, preparation and draping.
Assist in surgical procedures as first or second assistant when needed.
Write progress notes concerning operation in chart and postoperative routine orders to be countersigned that day by the operating surgeon.
Assist in transport and care of patient in Recovery Room or SICU when needed.
Screen and assess patients in urgent care and the emergency center and report to chief resident.
Screen all non-urgent consults to general surgery, determining appropriateness and schedule patients through pre-op screening clinic clerks.
