Duties

Help

Serves as an integral member of the Fire Management organization. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as a skilled crew member on a wildland fire engine.
  • As a trainee engine operator, drives engine to fire locations and positions engine for proper use and operation.
  • Performs basic fire line activities such as starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives.
  • May perform duties as a chain saw operator.

Physical Demands: Duties involve arduous and rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds, and other similar strenuous activities. The duties of this position require that the incumbent meet the arduous level of physical fitness as measured by the current physical fitness testing standards.

Work Environment: The work is primarily performed in a forest or desert environment in steep, uneven, rocky terrain with thick tangled vegetation, in smoky conditions. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees and may fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites, exposure to excessive noise, falling or rolling material. May require overnights in back country camps for extended periods of time. Work may require travel by light fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.

This is a Career-Seasonal appointment. You will be in a pay status for at least six months, but less than 12 months a year. When work or funds are not available, you will be placed in a non-pay status.

This position will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19.

Qualifications

This is an open continuous vacancy announcement and applications will be referred when vacancies occur. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. You must meet the specialized experience and selective factors outlined below.

Specialized Experience:

GS-04: You must meet 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade which includes on-the-line wildland fire experience in a forest/range fire control, prevention, or suppression work as a trainee wildland firefighter.

  • -OR- Two years of education above the high school level which includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management, or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine biology and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.
  • -OR- A combination of education and specialized experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.

The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.

Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date.

If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
