Summary

The incumbents will be part of the Program Management Organization (PMO) working with professionals from various disciplines such as engineering, computer science, mathematics. etc. The PMO provides program and acquisition management for the FAA infrastructure programs that transform, modernize and sustain the National Airspace System (NAS). The goal is for the student trainee to become familiar with the programs, projects, and functions of the organization.

Help

As a trainee, the incumbent performs a mixture of routine and somewhat complex technical tasks engineering tasks under the general direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or other more experienced employee. Assists manager and other employees in day-today operations. Responsibilities may include, assisting with the following:

As a student trainee, he/she assists in the evaluation of, or analysis into, computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform or present information by means of computer systems in the National Airspace System (NAS). Assists in application of the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system software organization to identify problems relating to NAS systems; develops software systems using knowledge of the techniques, procedures, and processes such as operating system theory, data structures, computer systems, system architecture, software engineering, and computer communications. Gathers and documents functional and security requirements. Leverages academic model(s) and creative perspectives to suggest ideas and approaches for manager's consideration.

Applies basic knowledge and limited experience in performing tasks. Regularly coordinates with a manager and/or other more experienced employee to plan time, prioritize assignments, and use assigned resources to accomplish tasks.

Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit, with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance. In some areas, may have limited contacts with external customers.

Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments, with little or no room for discretion. Receives detailed instructions from a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee. Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee for guidance.

Work is reviewed regularly during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality.

Work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to the activities of the organizational unit.

FV-C: To Qualify for the FV-C, you must show completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.

To qualify for this position, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program leading to a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science; OR pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher which includes 30 semester hours in a combination of computer science, mathematics, and statistics. To be acceptable, at least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

Other features of the Gateways Internship Program

APPOINTMENT - If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after graduation.

AGREEMENT: All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with the FAA that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship, etc.

CONVERSION: Although it is not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship program to a permanent excepted service position without further competition after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career- related work, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern's participant agreement.

TERMINATION: Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.

Education
