Duties

Help

The Student Intern with FAA’s Aeronautical Information Services will perform a mixture of routine and somewhat complex tasks under the general direction of a manger, team leader, or other more experienced employee. Regularly coordinates with a manager and other more experienced employee to plan time, prioritize assignments, and use assigned resources to accomplish tasks. The assignments are considered developmental in nature and for acquiring the knowledge of the principles and methods applied in the management of aeronautical data and information technology as it relates to aeronautical information systems and data. This position is designed to provide the trainee with initial experience and on-the-job training in the functions performed by an Aeronautical Information Specialist.

He/she applies basic knowledge and limited experience in performing tasks. The assignments include assisting manager or more experienced staff with variety of day-to-day functions associated with aeronautical information, including: development maintenance of Instrument Flight Procedures, En Route and Visual Charting, Airport & Terminal Products, as well as information technology and automation systems in support of these programs and analysis & improvement of various business processes.

The trainee carries out selected assignments intended to develop an understanding of the functions and systems for which Aeronautical Information Services is responsible. He/she performs a variety of clearly defined tasks that will enhance his/her knowledge of aeronautical information and aeronautical products.

Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit, with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance. In some areas, may have limited contact with external customers. Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments, with little or no room for discretion. Receives detailed instructions from manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee.

Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee for guidance. The work is reviewed regularly during the assignment, and at completion, to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality. Work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to the activities of the organizational unit.

To qualify for this position, you must be currently enrolled on a full-time or half-time basis (as defined by the institution) in an accredited college or university, in a program that leads to a bachelor's degree, or higher in a related field (i.e. Information Technology, Navigation, Mathematics, Physics, Geography, Engineering, Cartography, Aviation Science,or other subjects related to aeronautical navigation and operations.)

To qualify at the FV-C pay band (GS/FG 3-4), you must show completion of one full academic year of post-high school study.

Your experience examples should be specific and clearly reflect the highest level of ability.

  8. Appointment to an internship position will be temporary. The duration will depend upon the length of time it takes the intern to successfully complete the educational program, the minimum of 640 hours of career-related work, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern's Participant Agreement.
  9. An intern may be converted from the Internship program to a permanent position without further competition at the same or higher pay band in accordance with their Participant Agreement, unless terminated for any reason, and within 120 days after successful completion of the educational program.
  10. Work schedules may vary, minimum 20 hours per week.
  11. Multiple positions may be filled at the FV-C level in Silver Spring, MD.
