Duties

Help
  • Research, conceptualize, design, develop, test, evaluate, implement, and support innovative computing and bioinformatics systems and methodologies.
  • Provide expert advice and consultation to the scientific and research community in applying new and improved systems and technologies that will enable scientists and researchers to advance both basic and applied biomedical science research.
  • Evaluate, select, configure, integrate, implement, support, and enhance highly specialized software and hardware systems that are specifically designed to meet the needs of the biomedical research community supported by the BIRSS.
  • Research, investigate, and evaluate the applicability of rapidly advancing technology in the scientific computing and bioinformatics fields that involve the need for advanced capabilities in the analysis of biomedical imaging data.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to NIH scientists and researchers throughout NIH in the analysis and interpretation of biomedical imaging data.
  • Advise scientists and researchers in planning and designing research and clinical studies requiring advanced data analysis and interpretation capabilities.
  • Serve as an expert on applications of computing and biomedical imaging analysis systems and technologies in the research environment with emphasis on applications of such systems/technologies in the analysis/interpretation of biomedical imaging data.
  • Conduct research into new and innovative computing systems specifically designed to solve highly challenging biomedical research problems.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efforts of other government, industry, and academic research and development programs in the computer science area, particularly programs pursuing research directly applicable to the programs supported by BIRSS.

Qualifications

Educational Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science. OR
  • Bachelor's degree with thirty (30) semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least fifteen (15) of the thirty (30) semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
AND you qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement:
  • You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: designing and modifying software applications to help solve scientific computing problems; designing and conducting tests of software function and performance in the areas of graphics, modeling and simulation, and distributed file systems; writing technical reports and recommending changes or improvements to enhance system performance; and serving as a technical consultant for scientists in the area of scientific computing and associated automation technology.
