Duties

Help
  • Write and edit products that articulate, interpret, and explain a variety of subjects, tailored to specific media and audiences.
  • Gather, develop and check the accuracy of information by research and by interviews with subject-matter specialists, program officials, and others.
  • Work with manuscripts prepared by others who usually are experts in their fields, advising and assisting authors during the writing stage
  • Edit text for clarity and accuracy as well as consulting on the design and graphics.
  • Participate in conceptualizing and developing materials such as reports, testimony, proposed legislation, etc. to Congress and other audiences
  • Prepare material for printing and publication.
  • Provide a full range of editorial support.
  • Oversee contractor performance and/or coordinates logistical matters with clients and contractor(s).

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Writer-Editor, GS-1082-9 position, you must:

A. have completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.B. or J.D., if related;
OR
B. have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting in the research and analysis of documents for publication; gathering and checking the accuracy of information by research with subject-matter specialists; editing and preparing materials for publication; and using Web-based technologies to draft, edit, and layout material;
OR
C. have a combination of post-baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

In order to qualify for a Writer-Editor, GS-1082-11 position, you must:

A. have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related;
OR
B. have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing research and analysis of documents for publication and briefing materials on varied topics (articles, press releases, ad copy, reports, fact sheets, etc.); advising authors of options and alternatives where necessary and appropriate; editing for correctness and meaningful placement any illustrations, tables, and charts; reviewing materials for style and tone, grammatical correctness, clarity, appropriate reading level, and consistency with regulations and style and format requirements; and using Web-based technologies to draft, edit, and layout material;
OR
C. have a combination of post-baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

In order to qualify for a Writer-Editor, GS-1082-12 position:

You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: writing and editing products that articulate, interpret, and explain a variety of subjects, tailored to specific media and audiences; analyzing and editing both draft and final versions of a variety of written products prepared by the staff, management, or outside contractors; assisting authors or independently redrafting and modifying to improve the written material as to consistency, clarity, and succinctness as well as sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; coordinating the work of designers and technicians in developing effective, accessible formats, as well as illustrations and tabular material to augment the written message; and evaluating and adapting publishing procedures to changing technology.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
