Duties

Help

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant functions interdependently with physicians and is responsible for providing quality care, consultation, education, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty will be Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, though some evening or weekend shifts may be necessary.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/03/2020.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Nurse Practitioner Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree from a program approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license, or otherwise recognized, as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]
Nurse Practitioner Preferred Experience:
  • Adult/Geriatric/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Master's or completion of ACNP/CCNP post Master program strongly preferred.
  • At least three years of experience in a primary care practice.
  • Experience managing a complex patient cohort within an ambulatory care setting.
Physician Assistant Minimum Qualifications:
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (PANCE) - OR - a recent PA graduate who is eligible to take the PANCE.
  • Graduate of a PA training program or a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the ARC-PA or one of its predecessor organizations, AND
  • Possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education or are a current VA employee that was hired as a Physician Assistant prior to September 5, 2014.
  • Current, full, active certification as a Physician Assistant: As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.
Physician Assistant Preferred Experience:
  • Master's Degree.
  • At least three years of experience in a primary care practice.
  • Experience in managing a complex patient cohort within an ambulatory care setting.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Applicant must possess the ability to do the following: heavy lifting and carrying, 45 pounds and over; pulling, pushing and reaching above the shoulder; walking, standing, kneeling and repeated bending.

This position will remain open until the end of the calendar year. Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
