    Summary

    The Kansas City VA Medical Center is seeking highly qualified Registered Nurse to join our Medical Subspecialty Care service line. The Registered Nurse in this position will float between Johnson County, KS CBOC and our Hematology/Oncology department located at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.

    Responsibilities

    The Kansas City VA Radiation Therapy department is located in Overland Park, Kansas and the Chemotherapy Clinic is an outpatient department located at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.The Registered Nurse is specially trained to treat cancer patients who are receiving Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy administration. This Registered Nurse will spend one day every other week at the Kansas City VA Medical Center, assisting with documentation and requirements for cancer center certification, under the direction of the Hematology & Medical Oncology Division Director.

    Essential Functions provided by the Radiation Therapy clinic nurses include:

    • Assess patient's medical and physical condition by completing a nursing assessment on all new patients
    • Assists the radiation oncologist during patient examination(s)
    • Provides patient and family education in relation to patient's diagnosis and expected side effects of Rx
    • Works with the technical staff to ensure accuracy of treatment plan
    • Provides weekly assessment of the patient through chart review and meeting with the patient

    Essential Functions provided by the Chemotherapy nurses include:
    • Provides high risk IV infusions to include antibiotics, chemotherapy, blood and blood products
    • Places peripheral IV lines
    • Accesses, uses, and flushes Portacaths
    • Flushes, uses, and discontinues Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC lines)
    • Provides declotting of occluded central lines with Alteplase for outpatients
    • Sets up and instructs patients and family members on home infusion pumps
    • Provides patient and family education in relation to patient's diagnosis and expected side effects of treatment
    • Works with the technical staff to ensure accuracy of treatment plan

    Work Schedule: Various tours - Nine 8 hour tours per pay period.
