Summary

The Nurse Practitioner provides clinical Psychiatry services to veterans throughout the Northport VA Medical Center. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for diagnosing, planning, providing and evaluating mental health care for an assigned group of patients. The Nurse Practitioner functions as an independent practitioner in collaboration with a physician to provide health care in a variety of mental health care settings.

Duties

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health and protection from disease, and manage primary mental healthcare and treatment using a variety of therapeutic and interpersonal techniques for patients who are at risk for developing or presently have psychiatric disorders.
  • Assess, stabilize and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services.
  • Admit patients to the hospital.
  • Perform and document history and physical examinations.
  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric and social history including assessment for mental status, current and past history of violence, suicidal or self-harm behavior, substance abuse, level of functioning, trauma, sexual behaviors and developmental history.
  • Develop and order comprehensive treatment plans, managing psychiatric disorders, including, but not limited to, sever and persistent neurobiological disorders.
  • Conduct individual, group and family psychotherapy.
  • Perform crisis intervention, emergency evaluation and involuntary detainment according to State mental health laws.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients, families and caregivers as appropriate.
  • Prescribe medication according to VA regulation and within the guidelines of the Federal Controlled Substances Act.
  • Write admission orders and dictate discharge summaries.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/11/2019.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. NPs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English
  • Education: Possess a Master's degree from a program accredited by The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Registration, Licensure, Certification:
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional Nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
    • Licensed or otherwise recognized as a Nurse Practitioner in a State.
    • Maintain full and current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN or Bachelor's degree in a related field and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN or Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has Doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in Nursing or related field with BSN or Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard.

Preferred Experience: Experience working with acutely ill psychiatric patients and an interest in substance abuse.

Physical Requirements: Applicant must possess the ability to do the following: moderate lifting and carrying up to 44 pounds; pulling, pushing and reaching above the shoulder; walking, standing, kneeling and repeated bending.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
