This job opportunity is for a Peripheral Equipment Operator position in the Printing Section, Document Services Branch, National Processing Center (NPC), U.S. Census Bureau located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The Peripheral Equipment Operator operates, monitors, and adjusts various peripheral devices and systems in support of the large-scale computer systems. This position is included in the bargaining unit.

The individual selected for this position will:
Tour of Duty: Monday through Thursday, hours range from 3:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Alternate work schedule (AWS) is not available.
Employees are paid 10% night differential for any hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Candidates must clear the fingerprint process and initiate the required background investigation prior to final selection.
A one year trial period will be required.
You qualify at the Grade 05 level if you possess one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the Grade 04 level to meet the qualification requirements in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrates the knowledge of and skill of the operating procedures, techniques, and interrelationships of peripheral devices such as disk drive units, high speed on and off-line printers, and other related devices.
You qualify at the Grade 06 level if you meet the basic requirements and possess one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the Grade 05 level to meet the qualification requirements in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrates the knowledge of and skill to set-up and operate a variety of on and off-line peripheral equipment to include digital duplicators, inkjet imaging and high-speed laser printers and also diagnose and correct error situations or mechanical faults to prevent down time of equipment.
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:
Grade 05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college, university or business, secretarial, or technical school may be substituted for the required experience. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet qualifications.
Grade 06: Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.
Physical Requirements: This position requires substantial standing for extended periods of time and frequent pushing and pulling of bins, warehouse trucks or postal containers to other processing locations. The work requires frequent bending, stooping, reaching and walking while handling printed materials, paper and other components. The employee lifts, on a recurring basis, a variety of moderately heavy materials and supplies (approximately 30 pounds) such as boxes of forms, paper, cards and envelopes. Occasionally, the employee may be required to lift heavy (over 50 pounds) items such as mailbags, or large stacks of paper stock. The work is repetitive, fast paced and done in an assembly line atmosphere. Procedures and policies are established for jogging and flipping material, checking for completeness and print quality. The work is performed in a light industrial setting or computer environment, with risks and discomforts such as high noise levels, unusually cool climate, and exposure to inks, chemicals, toner and paper dust. More care is required to avoid accidents than needed in the usual office environment.
Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. and on occasion, up to 50 lbs.
