Recent Graduate appointments are intended to last for 1 year. Recent Graduates who satisfactorily complete the USDA Recent Graduates Program and meet all eligibility requirements for conversion may be non-competitively converted to a Term or Permanent appointment in the competitive service. Recent Graduates converted to Term appointments may later be non-competitively converted to a Permanent competitive service position.

The duration of the Recent Graduate's appointment in the excepted service is the trial period. Prior Federal civilian service may be creditable toward the completion of the required trial period.

This job is in a GS-5/6/7 career ladder, however it is only being advertised at the GS-5 and GS-7 levels.


Major Duties:          

  • Devises experimental techniques; and observes significant trends in experimental data.
  • Selects the best method for presenting the data and prepares drafts, tables, charts, figures and reports illustrating and summarizing results for use by the research scientist in preparation of manuscripts, reports, etc.
  • Modifies parts, instruments, and equipment; and takes action or makes recommendations based on preliminary interpretation of data or results of analyses.
  • Performs a variety of tests that are not completely standardized, using various standard references, guides, and precedents to obtain needed information, and select and adapt methods and procedures.

Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience operating and assembling hydrologic equipment and instruments; and taking measurements and readings to evaluate test data related to hydrology.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study in an appropriate field of science, engineering, construction, or industrial technology or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses related to engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.

At the GS-7

Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience operating and assembling hydrologic equipment and instruments; taking measurements and readings to evaluate test data related to hydrology; and assisting with making recommendations based on interpretation of hydrologic data.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include engineering, hydrology, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.

A combination of education and experience

Education

A post-secondary certificate program must have been completed at a qualified educational institution equivalent to at least 1 academic year or full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.
