This position is located in the Facilities Operations Unit, Facilities Management Section, Support Services Branch of the U.S. Census Bureau's National Processing Center. This position is included in the bargaining unit.
The individual selected for this position will:
Tour of Duty: Variable Schedule. Must be able to work Day shift and Night shift. Overtime may be required.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Candidates must clear the fingerprint process and initiate the required background investigation prior to final selection.
A one year trial period may be required.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequent and long periods of walking, standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing are required. May perform strenuous work while standing, sitting, or lying. Works off scaffold platform and catwalks while standing, sitting, or lying down. Works in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods. Frequently lifts and carries tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. and occasionally items weighing above 50 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in confined spaces and in awkward positions. Must be able to work in confined spaces both inside and outside of boilers. Must be able to enter and exit the following openings: 12"x 16", 43" oval, 24"x 17" oval, 24"x 24" rectangular, 28.5" x 28.5" oval. These openings lead to interior spaces of boilers and water tanks. Interior spaces range from approximately 30 inches in diameter up to several feet. Works off scaffolds platform and catwalks while standing, sitting, or lying down. May also be required to work in areas where there is hot equipment and surfaces. Works outside/outdoors where there is some exposure to extremes of heat and cold, high winds, in hot sunlight, wet ground, and rain. Works around high and low voltage. Worker is subject to cuts and abrasions; burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam, and contact with piping and boilers. Works safely, using correct work methods and correct Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) in order to maintain and operate the power plant.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Selectee must possess the following certification within 12 months of selection: Type I (small appliances) AND Type II (high pressure systems) Certification OR Universal certification. Applicants who already have a Type I and Type II or Universal Certification may include that in their application.
