The Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MH RRTP) Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing direct Veteran care in the MH RRTP setting. The RN uses the nursing process and evidence-based practice to perform nursing functions related to coordination of patient care utilizing patient centered practices, and a focus on excellence in nursing care and customer service.

The RN works in partnership with the Mental Health Treatment Team, Veterans, and families for promoting wellness through effective holistic, recover-oriented treatment, and the management of mental health disorders including substance abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, and serious mental illness.
The RN assumes responsibility for care provided, duties on the unit, and delegates care to unlicensed staff members. The RN performs a comprehensive holistic health assessment, conducts psycho-education at the Veteran's level of understanding including recovery principles, relapse prevention, illness management, health promotion, medication management, and independent functioning. The RN monitors and evaluates patient response to therapy based on Nursing Practice Standards, including monitoring lab results, other clinical data, and is able to apply knowledge of medical illness when conducting assessments. The RN performs telephone and/or face to face screening, wellness monitoring, and follow-up care. The RN demonstrates Veteran-centered care and utilizes strategies for crisis prevention and management. She/he collaborates with patients to assess and identify needs, issues, care goals, and resources in critical factors for achieving desired outcomes related to outpatient service delivery, focusing on illness management, recovery, and improving the Veteran's quality of life.
The RN serves as an advocate for patients and is a team player to colleagues and she/he continues to enhance her/his own and the team's professional growth. The RN utilizes approved protocols and guidelines to authorize the provision of care to include, but not limited to: assessing, ordering, treating patients experiencing acute and chronic symptoms within the residential setting. The RN monitors and tracks consults in collaboration with the team to assist in ensuring the Veteran receives the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
