Summary

WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? As a Tax Examining Technician you will resolve inquiries regarding tax account issues such as tax delinquency, adjust taxpayer accounts and provide information about general Service procedures. In this role, you will analyze and take appropriate actions as identified in the specific position for which you are applying. Your assignments may include communicating with taxpayers and their representatives regarding their accounts on notices issued. If you are selected for a bi-lingual position you will communicate with taxpayers in Spanish as well as English.

WHAT IS THE WAGE AND INVESTMENT DIVISION? The Wage & Investment Division (W&I) serves about 122 million taxpayers who file upwards of 94 million returns each year. Key W&I objectives are to provide high-quality taxpayer assistance, and to enable taxpayers to transact and communicate electronically to file their returns, make payments and receive assistance. W&I partners with private organizations to provide assistance to such disadvantaged groups as elderly and low-income taxpayers.

**This is a roster announcement open continuously and allows applicants to apply up to the last cut off date listed in the announcement. The roster will be used to fill positions through the next 12 months. We are projecting approximately 8 vacancies be filled during the life of this roster, open period of 07/20/2018 to 05/28/2019 - selections may be made through 08/28/2019. Contingent upon funding and space requirements, one or more vacancies may be filled in the individual PODs listed below as they become available in that location during the life of this roster. Applicants need to apply and be eligible by 11:59 pm ET (Eastern Time) at the close of each of the following cut off dates to be considered: 08/02/2018, 11/26/2018, 02/26/2019, and 05/28/2019. Help

As a Tax Examining Technician you will:

  • Evaluate all available information and take corrective actions, such as credit transfers requests, re-computed tax, and/or penalty and interest.
  • Access relevant systems to view and/or update taxpayers' accounts regarding payments received, review status of the case, and/or to make account adjustments.
  • Enter data into automated system to adjust tax, penalty, and/or credit adjustments.
  • Recognize indications of tax fraud; make determinations and use sound judgment concerning taxpayers' data and responses.
  • Gain cooperation of taxpayers by explaining the best options available to resolve the problem or question, mutual interests, and to make sure they understand their responsibilities.
  • Interpret the law as it relates to the issues and if affects the performance and efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Educate taxpayers on action(s) needed to achieve compliance with tax filing/liabilities.
If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-4 LEVEL: You must have one (1) year of general experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-3 grade level in the Federal service. General experience for this position includes: progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. OR
You may substitute education for general experience as follows: Two years (2) of education above high school in any field of study (education may have been obtained in an accredited junior college, college, university, business, secretarial or technical school).

-The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

  • Fresno: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm (day shift); 4:30 pm - 1:00 am (swing shift)
  • Kansas City: 10:00 am - 6:30 pm
  • Work is primarily sedentary, but may require repetitive arm and hand motion, extended sitting, bending, stooping, pushing carts, scanning, on rare occasions light lifting (up to 40 pounds) and reading from a computer screen.
