Duties

Help
  • Serves as a Writer-Editor for the Office of Justice Services, providing editorial services to the Director of OJS and OJS personnel.
  • Reviews, writes or edits reports, correspondence, manuals and instructions. Ensures that reports are objective and contain the proper tone for the intended audience.
  • Assists in determining when and how to display statistical layouts, such as charts and graphs, to ensure consistency and understanding of the data.
  • Assists in counseling staff members on improving their writing techniques and recommends or provides opportunity for formal training.
  • Assists in creating original content for the external Web site and the internal intranet for OJS.
  • Assists in preparing materials for testimony and briefings, internal/external task forces, Congressional requests, hotline referrals, etc.

Qualifications


GS-09:
To qualify at the GS-09 grade level you must meet ONE of the following criteria:

A. Specialized Experience - To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have one year specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level such as: 1) preparing a variety of documents to include reports, responses to routine inquiries, letters, and other related documents; 2) reviewing, editing, and writing a variety of printed materials for internal and external audiences; and 3) providing advice to others regarding using appropriate format, grammar and style.
OR
B. Education - Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D., if related at an accredited institution.
OR
C. A combination of education and specialized experience that totals 100% of the requirement.

GS-11:
To qualify at the GS-11 grade level you must meet ONE of the following criteria:

A. Specialized Experience - In addition to experience at the lower grade level, to qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have one year specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level such as: 1) recommending changes to improve clarity of edited materials; 2) implementing methods to improve document text and appropriate phraseology for an intended audience; 3) reviewing and verifying information gathered for documents by researching or consulting with subject-matter experts; and 4) utilizing desktop publishing technology to draft, edit, design and develop written materials.
OR
B. Education - PH.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

C. A combination of education and specialized experience that totals 100% of the requirement.

One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Additional information

All new hires earn the beginning salary of their pay grade (Step 1). Starting salary is $56,233 for the GS-9 and $68,036 for the GS-11.

The full performance level of this position is GS-11.
