As an AV PRESERVATION SPECIALIST, GS-1001-11, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
Digitize original archival audio and video records using computer hardware and software technology, as well as tape bases digital recorders/reproducers.
Produce audio and video files as well as producing physical media.
Perform audio and video processing and produce hard copy output (tape, optical, disc, etc.).
Inspect, repair, rehouse audio, video, and motion film records.
Conduct quality control inspections of local work produced to ensure NARA standards are maintained.
Operate Apple Macintosh and windows computer-based audio and video digitizing systems, digital and analog video recorders, digital and analog audio recorders, motion picture flatbed editors, time base correctors, color bar and black burst generators, various software plug-ins, outboard processors, convection oven (for the process of baking polyester tapes suffering from sticky shed syndrome), and various tools used in the conservation and repair of archival audio and video media.
responsible for the calibration of all types of equipment, troubleshooting of hardware, software, setup, testing, and upgrading of equipment.
Responsible for reading the reproduction or project requests and with guidance, determine the appropriate equipment and approach to be used that will best meet quality and time expectations.
Perform all playback, digitizing, audio and video processing, and quality control verifications independently.
Demonstrate customer service skills through interaction with NARA personnel.
You will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
Designated and/or Random Drug Testing may be required.
Qualifications
You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal government that has included such activities as: a) digital reformatting and repairing BOTH obsolete and modern audio recordings with formats including 1/4-inch open reel audio tape with varying track configurations and audio cassettes; b) digital reformatting and repairing BOTH obsolete and modern videotape formats such as 3/4" U-matic video, Digital Betacam, Betacam SP, VHS. Candidates must be proficient in creating technical and administrative metadata utilizing archival preservation guidelines and Archival Management and information Science principles in an Audio and Video Preservation Laboratory environment. Candidates must also be proficient in equipment calibration, repair, maintenance, system design, integration, and implementation of new systems to meet reformatting and digitization needs.
B. A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Related graduate level education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position. OR
C. A combination of education and experience as listed above.
