About the Position:
This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This Clinical Nurse position is located within the Directorate for Nursing, Department of Medical Nursing, Medical Nursing (5 East). This is Med/Surg Nursing Unit is a 22 single bed unit that primarily provides care for the geriatric population.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged periods of walking and standing are required as well as recurring requirements to lift, bend, stoop, etc., in helping patents before and after surgery.

Duties

Help

You will plan, delegate, provide, administer and document professional patient care within a medical/surgical environment. Direct nursing care based on patient care requirements and staffing skills in accordance with nursing standards of practice, local/regional/federal policies and procedures. Set up, operate and monitor medical equipment. Monitor safety hazards, ensuring immediate action is taken to resolve or correct potential concerns. Collaborate with licensed independent provider (LIP) to make changes to nursing care plans. Establish criteria and evaluate/access effectiveness of patient treatment. Instruct patients and family members regarding disease processes and provides emotional support, as needed. Act as facilitator to mediate complaints and concerns of patients, family members, and staff, taking immediate action to resolve or refer to a higher level. Determine staffing requirements/mix and appropriateness of bed utilization, based on analysis of patient acuity data. Plans, delegate and direct nursing care based on patient care requirements and staff skill levels. Serve as unit shift-team leader for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned, or act as mentor and preceptor to newly assigned staff.

  • This position is covered by the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program as a testing designated position (TDP). You are required to pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated as Mission Essential and the incumbent must assume essential personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements:

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) which includes: providing professional nursing care duties to medical/surgical patients; formulating/implementing patient assessments and care plans AND possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
