Help

This is a developmental position at the full performance level Metadata Technician, GS-1001-09, you will perform all or some of the following duties:

  • Create basic metadata for digital images produced from the scanning of original archival records, including transcription of archival information, assigning subject headings and keywords, creating basic technical and structural metadata, performing basic authority work, searching databases and compiling and/or verifying existing descriptive information, resolving basic indexing problems, undertaking any special indexing/metadata projects/requirements, and conducting quality control over the projects.
  • Assist in managing indexing and metadata workflow, including participating in quality control, additional editing, and database maintenance of all metadata and indexing records created to ensure lab standards are being maintained.
  • Works on large-scale imaging production projects, but may also provide indexing, metadata creation, and data entry for other projects, including digitization for exhibits, routine imaging, special requests, and other moderately complex digitization projects.
  • Works primarily on Windows computer platforms, using a variety of software applications to create and review indexing and metadata information. Reads project requirements and performs indexing and metadata creation work independently with moderate to minimal guidance

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-06 level, candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level of federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: scanning, indexing, and describing digital images. Experience in creating data entry of metadata using a variety of databases and spreadsheets.

To qualify at the GS-07 level, candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level of federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: scanning, indexing, and description of digital images from original archival records. Must have practical knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Experience in the creation and data entry of metadata using a variety of databases and spreadsheets. Experience performing document preparation, digital scanning, and quality assurance. Experience using initiative in carrying out recurring scanning, indexing and creation of basic metadata assignments independently without specific instructions.

To qualify at the GS-08 level, candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level of federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: scanning, indexing, and description of digital images from original archival records. Incumbent must have experience of Microsoft Office suite in a work setting. Experience in the creation of technical and structural metadata, entry of information into one or more networked databases/systems; and quality of control of both automated and manually created information. Experience in performing document preparation, digital scanning, and quality assurance. In addition to practical knowledge of standard procedures technical methods are also expected to be performed in carrying out limited projects that involve use of specialized complicated techniques. Experience in performing analysis of the subject, phase, or issues involved in each assignment, and choosing course of action which may have to be selected from many alternatives. Position will assist the Supervisory Archivist in preparing and maintaining operating procedures, reports, and production records.

To qualify at the GS-09 level, candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level of federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: scanning, indexing, and describing digital images from original archival records. Incumbent must have experience creating technical and structural metadata and entering that information into one or more networked databases/systems; and quality of control of both automated and manually created information. The incumbent must be able to create indexing and metadata information according to locally established procedures and national standards. Incumbent must have Microsoft Suite competency in order to independently use these systems to enter and manipulate data. Experience in managing indexed and metadata workflow, including participation in quality control, additional editing, and database maintenance of all metadata and indexed records created to ensure lab standards are being maintained. Must be experienced in reading project requirements and perform all indexing and metadata creation work independently with moderate to minimal guidance. Position requires resolving problems and recommending solutions; preparing and maintaining operating procedures, reports, and production records; and utilizing computer technology and software programs.

Probationary Period: You will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
