This position is part of the Federal Records Center Program, National Archives and Records Administration. As a ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, you will be involved in a project that is expected to last anywhere from 13 months to 24 months.

This a TERM appointment with an initial employment period of 13 months. The appointment may be extended up to a maximum of four years without further competition.

Part of the interview process for this position requires candidates to pass a physical ability test designed to measure candidates' ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 50-pound boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 14 feet high.

Local travel between all 3 locations, (Lenexa, Kansas City and Lees Summit) may be required.

Help

As a ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, GS-1421-5, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
Provides reference service by searching for, refiling, or interfiling records in any of the records center holdings. Requests, refiles, and interfiles may be received in a variety of forms and filing systems are not always constant. Requested information is often vague and additional information may need to be gathered through use of office finding aids or contact with appropriate agency personnel. Extraction of information is required. Typical work at this level may include, but is not limited to, Selective Service Requests, IRS Requests for transcript of taxpayer account, VA-XC records where extensive searching for missing records is required, Customs records, various requests for medical records, problem cases which cannot be completed by lower graded employee, and requests requiring a composed reply.

Provides technical assistance to lower grade employees (GS-1 thru GS-4).

As directed, provides training to, or conducts a quality check of work performed by lower grade employees.
As directed, batches work, completes and reviews task sheet information. Pre-selects audits. Assigns work as predetermined and directed by the supervisor.

May deal with the public while servicing walk-in requesters who wish to review records, or when dealing with requesters who wish to use TERCS.
Oversees a crew of employees in the proper placement of new accessions. Must determine needs, co-ordinate crew and equipment, and conduct a quality check to ensure records are placed correctly on shelving. Indicates completion of shelving on appropriate form and prepares NARS-5 input documentation.
Oversees a crew of employees in the disposal of records. Helps to assure the timely and accurate accomplishment of records disposal as indicted on the 22 Report provided by A&D. Takes all steps necessary to prevent the erroneous disposal of documents. Assures that proper witness disposal procedures are followed. Submits necessary documents and reports for review and approval.
As directed. Conducts review of 90-day notice accession suspense file and initiates appropriate follow-up paperwork as necessary.
Checks accession shipments to assure correct number of boxes are received, reviews the box labeling of accessions, accepts shipment when shipment is correct. Reports discrepancies to appropriate higher graded technician (lead or supervisor) for further action.
Prepares and updates simple finding aids.
May participate in the assignment of space.

GS-05 - Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.

Education may be substituted for experience. GS-5: Four years of college education from an accredited educational institution leading to a bachelor's degree or 120 hours of progressively higher level college education from an accredited educational institution.

Combination of Experience and Education: Combination of education and experience from an accredited educational institution to meet the total requirements of the position. (Note: You must have a large enough percentage of required experience and a large enough percentage of required education, so that when added together, the percentage would equal 100%).
