This position is part of the Federal Records Center Program, National Archives and Records Administration. As a ARCHIVES TECH, you will be involved in a project that is expected to last anywhere from 13 months to 24 months.

This is a TERM appointment with an initial employment period of 13 months. The appointment may be extended up to a maximum of four years without further competition.

Local travel between all 3 locations, (Lenexa, Kansas City and Lees Summit) may be required.

Help

As an ARCHIVES TECH, GS-1421-7, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

Identifies and analyzes inefficient work processes or unprecedented problems that arise. Develops procedures, instructions, and training aids to improve quality, ensure the effective operation of quality control and assist NARA in reaching its strategic goals.
Plans and coordinates truck deliveries and pickups in coordination with crew leaders and function chiefs as applicable, to facilitate the expeditious and correct shelving of records, within the prescribed time frame.
Responsible for the accomplishment of quality control auditing and on-the-job training, as assigned, to ensure a high degree of accuracy required by management for all reference service operations. Incumbent conducts quality audits of: routine reference service operations; mail processing operations; refiles and interfiles of records; and special projects, as assigned, including non-records center activities. Based on NARA and Federal agency audit requirements, withdraws and examines a representative sample of completed work in records processing, reference, refiling, and interfiling operations ensuring proper completion. Develops and maintains reports of audit findings which are used by the supervisor when rating staff performance on the quality factor of the annual performance appraisal.Prepares and maintains various routine and one-time reports pertaining to RCO operations such as auditing, training, etc. Issues reports as appropriate. Responsible for ensuring that timeliness and quality of work is accomplished. Exercises delegated authority to accept, amend, or reject completed work. Maintains production records and submits periodic and special reports. Provides technical assistance and on-the-job training to employees who experience difficulty with assigned tasks and advises them about new procedures or changes in work procedures, answers questions and provides technical advice and assistance concerning the location of records and the validity of requests with regard to administrative or regulatory restrictions. Monitors working conditions such as safety, lighting, equipment maintenance, etc., and corrects problems or reports actual or potential problems to supervisor for correction. Serves as a contact point for day-to-day agency liaison. Applies an in-depth technical knowledge of basic archival procedures and techniques as they relate to reference and service matters in order to provide service to federal agencies and the public.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in the Federal government performing various records center activities (relocation, space control, reference, special projects, etc.); planning, organizing, or coordinating work to accomplish goals; analyzing program or project performance and recommending improvements; preparing or updating technical material and statistical reports; and providing technical advice or presentations on records management;
OR - 1 year of graduate level education leading to a degree in a related field of study such as History, Library Science, etc. from an accredited educational institution;
OR
A combination of education and experience as listed above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
