Help

The NOD isresponsible to provide nursing supervisory coverage to inpatient units during the non-administrative tours of duty. The NOD provides supplemental nursing staff to both the inpatient and outpatient departments when notified of staffing shortages during the non-administrative tours. The NOD acts as a resource to the nursing staff, responds in all emergency situations, interprets VAMHCS policies and medical center standard operating procedures, maintains a productive relationship with other disciplines and administrative staff, and is responsive to the needs of the patients and their families. The NOD is responsible to conduct rounds on every shift and assists staff with the Final Salute procedures. The NOD is responsible for the documentation and timely reporting of information during the non-administrative tours of duty. This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Supplemental Staffing- Baltimore/CBOC (NMSS BT/CBOC) and is assigned to the Staffing Office of the VAMHCS Associate Director for Patient Care Services.  

The Nurse Officer of the Day is a currently licensed professional Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related healthcare field. A Master's Degree in Nursing or related healthcare field is highly desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate progressive clinical experience to include critical care experience. Previous management or supervisory experience is highly desirable. ACLS certification is preferred.

Your salary and grade will be determined by the Professional Standards Board (PSB). The PSB is a peer review process. The PSB will review your individual qualifications, education, professional training/internship(s) and professional experience to determine the most appropriate salary and grade based on your individual accomplishments.

Work Schedule: At least one full-time position exists for an experienced RN to provide leadership and supervisory expertise as Nurse Officer of the Day (NOD) on a rotating tour of duty. The NOD is pre-scheduled to provide administrative coverage at the Baltimore Medical Center from 3:30 pm to 8:00 am Monday through Friday, and 24 hours (MID-MID) on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays with rotating shift coverage to midnight tour as needed. The NOD may be requested to work a day tour (7:30a-4p) Monday through Friday for special projects or coverage of staffing needs as required.

Physical Requirements: Scope of the Examination: The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies

English Language Proficiency: RN's must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing.  Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. 

Grade Determinations:  The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. 
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience:

- ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience required.
- Progressive clinical experience to include critical care experience preferred
- Previous management/supervisory experience preferred
- ACLS certification is preferred.
