The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) is located on 337 acres situated on the Gulf of Mexico in Bay Pines, FL. The Bay Pines VAHCS is part of the VISN 8 Sunshine Healthcare Network and services the healthcare needs of America's Veterans in West Central and Southwestern coastal Florida. BPVAHCS provides care to a veteran population of more than one million in Florida and treats approximately 98,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 397 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties as well as inpatient residential and long term care.  Bay Pines, Florida is home to several beaches and parks. Florida is known as the "sunshine" state with an average of approximately 240 days of sunshine a year! The area boasts numerous extracurricular activities and sporting events each year with three major sports franchises represented within the Tampa Bay area. The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System is actively recruiting for experienced Registered Nurse's (RN) to fill the Acute Care Med/Surg Oncology Unit RN vacancies at the C.W. The RN that we are seeking will be responsible for providing and coordinating the direct and indirect total nursing care for patients within the general med-surg or oncology population.  He/she should be prepared to use the nursing process to assess, diagnose, manage, implement and evaluate nursing actions. The primary responsibility of the oncology nurse is to assist the oncologist in treating and caring for cancer patients, or high risk patients who don't have cancer but are at risk of developing it. The chemo-certified nurse will administer chemotherapy and other treatments as directed by the oncologist. They will also be active in the treatment of any side-effects a patient might have after receiving treatment.

Other responsibilities will include but are not limited to  giving blood transfusions; medication administration; conducts physical assessments; maintains patients records; assists with patients treatment plan; schedule tests; provide emotional stability and a positive atmosphere for both the patient and family; provides counseling and education for patient and family. Additionally he/she will update treatment plans and provide point of care testing as well as team leading.  He/She will occupy a leadership role with oversight of NAs and LPNs.

Work Schedule: 12 hour night shift tour, with a weekend rotation.

Education/Experience Requirements: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

A current BLS and ACLS is required.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

U.S. citizenship:  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education:  Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing.  Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Licensure:  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. 

Grade Determinations:  The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. 

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience: One (1) Year or more of successful nursing practice in Acute Care-Oncology experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
