The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is a highly skilled practitioner who has advanced education and clinical training in the diagnosis and management of client problems. He/she is able to analyze patient care problems and formulate treatment plans tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Nurse practitioners provide a unique approach to health care that enables them to undertake preventive patient care measures and provide educational support to veterans and their families about their medications, illnesses, and treatment. Care is directed toward the age-specific and developmental needs of the patient population. You will work as a member of the Mental Health team to provide mental health services to veterans. The nurse practitioner demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care. He/she demonstrates a systematic body of knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment of actual or potential health care problems, including syntheses of data, and the use of complex skills and interventions.
Assigned Duties (include but are not limited to):
· Responsibility and accountability for all elements of the advance practice nursing process.
· Adherence to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice.
· Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
· Responsible for family education, patient self-management after discharge and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
· Diagnoses, conducts therapy, and prescibes psychotropic medications for patients who have psychiatric, medical mental conditions, or substance abuse problems.
· Provides emergency psychiatric services.
· Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
· Provides evidence based therapy.
· Serves as advocate for patients and is clinically supportive of staff.
Duties are primarily performed in the Behavioral Health Department but the incumbent may be directed to work in other areas of the organization in extenuating or emergency situations.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires a combination of walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, pulling, and pushing with potentially long periods of sitting. Transferring patients and objects may occasionally be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or during patient procedures and care. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Use of fingers, both hands, and near and far vision is required.
Incumbent must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a behavioral health nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
Preferred Experience: Behavioral Health.
