Verification and maintenance of a current, valid, active, unrestricted license, as a Nurse, in any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States is required AND a current, active certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by an appropriate certifying body, such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. (One year of nursing experience as a military corpsman that has been accepted by a State licensing body may be accepted in lieu of education at the GS-4 level.)
Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
The following shows the amounts of education and/or experience required to qualify for positions covered by this standard.
GS-11: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level OR Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education
To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-11 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS- level) that included duties such as:
Assess, plan and provide comprehensive and therapeutic medical care to individual geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric and infant patients and their families. Collaborate with other health care professionals to develop treatment protocols, standards of practice and policies. Participate in ongoing quality improvements activities, including audits, chart reviews. Provide technical assistance to other health care providers and staff.
GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level
To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-12 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-11 level) that included duties such as:
Teach and counsel patients and family on disease prevention and health maintenance techniques. Promote responsible behavior and implements plans to further enhance patient/family understanding of medical problems. Serve as a consultant and provide technical assistance to other health care providers and staff. Makes diagnosis and decisions concerning medical and nursing care needs of patients, formulates and implements plan of care.
GS-13: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level.
To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-13 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-12 level) that included duties such as:
Provides comprehensive patient management services in both inpatient and outpatient settings which may include transfer and discharge orders, ordering labs and radiologic tests for patient assessment and diagnosis, ordering medication, consultation, monitor patients, perform emergency procedures, collaborate with team to ensure strategies are successful in meeting patient care. Make diagnosis by analyzing collected data, formulating differential diagnosis based on history, physical examination, and diagnostic test results. Participates in Quality Improvement programs and initiatives, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission standards.
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

This position has promotion potential to the GS-13 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
