The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hanford Site is home to 56 million gallons of chemical and radioactive waste stored in underground tanks, the result of more than four decades of plutonium production. Incumbent supports both the Richland Operations Office and the Office of River Protection. The Richland Operations Office is responsible for safely stabilizing and dispositioning the Site's special nuclear material inventory; dispositioning the Site's transuranic (TRU) material inventory; deactivating and demolishing excess facilities; remediating waste sites; remediating groundwater and vadose contamination; and handling all non-tank farm radioactive, mixed, and hazardous waste operations.
The EK authority is used to enhance the Department of Energy’s recruitment and retention of highly qualified scientific, engineering, and technical personnel whose duties will relate to safety at defense nuclear facilities of the Department. Appointments made, and compensation fixed, under this authority may be made “without regard to the civil service laws” and are excepted from the provisions of Title V, United States code.
