Duties

  • As a Title 10 Faculty Member (Military History), you will perform the following duties which is not an all-inclusive list:
  • Design and develop course material plus guide student research efforts for the SAMS curriculum. Directs several graduate-level research studies and assesses students’ performance in an academic environment.
  • Conducts extensive research to develop otherwise scarce or fragmented source information for use in graduate-level instruction.
  • Presents research in narrative, analytical or other appropriate formats including professional publications, lectures, seminars, books, professional sponsored official journals, informal talks, and audio-visual programs.
  • Designs, develops, conducts, and evaluates graduate level classes in military art and science for School of Advanced Military Studies students at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
  • Conducts faculty development seminars for faculty members of SAMS who teach lessons related to his/her primary field in the SAMS core curriculum.
  • Develops instructional materials, writes lesson advance sheets, selects course readings and speakers.
  • Maintains current knowledge of world affairs that relate to his/her primary specialty.
  • Advises on the acquisition of published materials for the Ike-Skelton-Combined Arms Research Library and other materials. Upon request, provide critical evaluation and comment on draft doctrinal manuscripts.
  • Knowledgeable on use of the Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Successfully complete, and maintain currency on, all Department of the Army mandatory individual training courses as prescribed by federal law, Department of War (DoW) directives, and Army regulations within established timeframes
  • Perform academic, research, and institutional duties in accordance with the U.S. Army CGSC Title10 Faculty Manual.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining compliance with the professional standards, faculty responsibilities, and academic integrity regulations outlined therein

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • The work involves physical effort typical of teaching positions, with substantial platform instruction, normally performed in classrooms and offices at Fort Leavenworth.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: This position requires the incumbent to possess a Ph.D. (may be ABD) from a regionally accredited college or university in military history, diplomatic history, war studies or related areas. If you are ABD, you will be required to obtain your Doctorate degree within two (2) years from your entry-on-duty date. Failure to obtain a Doctorate degree within the required two (2) year timeframe will be cause for your removal from the position. (NOTE: You must submit copies of your official transcripts with your application package).

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience designing, developing, teaching and evaluating adult level undergraduate or graduate classes, evaluating, and revising curriculum, and directs undergraduate or graduate level research studies either in history or in a directly related field and evaluating student performance in an academic environment.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

  1. Deliver adult graduate level instruction/facilitation
  2. Direct student research projects to completion
  3. Curriculum development and assessment methodologies
  4. Communicate effectively both oral and written formats
  5. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and collegiality with fellow faculty
  6. Participate in and supervise a student Staff Ride which involves domestic travel for one week of the academic year
  7. Level of accredited education

NOTE: This position may be filled at one of the following academic ranks:
  • Instructor
  • Assistant Professor
  • Associate Professor
  • Professor

*Academic rank and salary will be determined based on the selectee's education and experience.

Faculty appointed under Title 10 U.S.C. are eligible for academic promotion (e.g., from Assistant to Associate or Full Professor) in accordance with the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) faculty promotion policy, based on demonstrating sustained excellence in teaching, scholarship, and institutional service.

If you are currently serving on active duty: You MUST submit a certification from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions not later than 120 days after the date the certification is submitted for consideration in the hiring process AND has a compensable service-connected disability.
