Summary

The Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) under Community Care service line monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues and maintains efficient workflow in the Community Care office. The Lead, MSA serves as a Consult Coordinator for Community Care Program. The MSA works collaboratively with other members of an expanded health care team to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care.

Duties include but are not be limited to:

  • Assures coverage of all areas of responsibility; conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work
  • Ensures accurate and timely authorization of all Community Care and Non VA Care encounters
  • Ensures accurate and timely scheduling of Community Care and Non VA Care appointments
  • Provides guidance to staff members, to include changes in policies and procedures
  • Distributes and balances workload
  • Creates and maintains employee work schedules
  • Orients and provides on-the-job training for new and current employees
  • Ensures that all training requirements are met
  • Organizes the work structure of his/her assigned areas
  • Acts as liaison between other MSA's and staff in order to resolve day-to-day conflicts
  • Orients medical staff to basic administrative policies and procedures dealing with outpatient scheduling and other administrative topics.
  • Provides administrative support to Physicians, Physician's Assistants, Nurses, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Dieticians, Social Workers, and other administrative and professional staff throughout the Primary Care Service area

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f)
  • Education: High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must possess the below requirements to qualify at the GS-07.
  • Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to meeting the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate, in their resume, the following KSAs:
    • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community.
    • Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff.
    • Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting.
    • Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to provide staff development and training.
    • Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics
