The Meat Grading and Standards (MGS) Division is responsible for developing, implementing, and administering programs for the grading, verification and/or inspection of beef, veal & calf, lamb, and pork.

Duties

  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Shares fully with the Regional Director in recommending new or revised policies, programs, procedures, and standards for nationwide use.
  • Maintenance of obligations records and reports in accordance with established procedures.
  • Represents the Branch, Division, and Agency in contact with members of the trade, Federal and State agencies, etc.
  • Shares fully with the Regional Director responsibilities for directing and supervising the meat grading and certification programs throughout the regional area.
  • Plans and adjusts work methods to due to variable operating conditions and the changing methods of operations on the part of the industry.
  • Identifies training needs of subordinates for their continuing development.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

GS-13 Specialized Experience:

  • Evaluating the technical adequacy and acceptability of commodity grading, certification, and audit programs.
  • Resolving billing and fiscal accountability issues.
  • Supervising others and in managing employee performance.
  • Assessing staffing needs and with recruiting, hiring, and maintaining a professional workforce.
  • Maintaining contacts, communicating, and collaborating with a wide array of internal and external program stakeholders.
Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • First time hires to the federal government normally start at the lowest rate of the salary range for the grade selected.
  • Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expense associated with reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
  • Locality pay will vary based upon the selectee's duty location. A final salary determination will be made upon selection.
