About the Position: This is a permanent, full-time position with New Orleans District, Operations Division. The position performs a wide range of maintenance and repair, carpentry, painting, cement finishing work, lawn maintenance, shop and yard maintenance.

Duties

Help
  • Performs carpentry, painting, cement finishing work and lawn maintenance.
  • Performs field maintenance repairs to heavy engineering type equipment, rail cranes, personnel carts, tractors, mowers, excavators, dozers and automotive plant.
  • Operates tractors, dozers, excavators, structure cranes, overhead crane, motor grades, mowers, forklift, dump truck and ATVs/UTVs.
  • Operates small outboard powered motorboat.
  • Performs purchase of supplies and parts as a Government Purchase Card (GPC) Holder.
  • Operates structure cranes during maintenance and flood operations.

  • This position requires the possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain Crane Operator Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • This position requires the possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • This position requires a Boat Operator's Permit to operate boats up to 26 feet.

  • This position requires a pre-employment and standard annual physical.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT - Is required to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods, with frequent bending, reaching, climbing, crouching, and working in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting; is required to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs., uses similar effort in pushing, pulling, mining, and positioning parts and tools. The constant vibration of equipment and the jolting resulting from operating equipment on rough terrain causes considerable strain.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS -Work is performed in shop areas and/or outdoors under all types of weather conditions. Is exposed tonoise, grease, dirt, exhaust fumes, etc. and may receive cuts, bums, abrasions, and some skin
    irritation. Is occasionally required to wear protective clothing and/or equipment that may be heavy or
    uncomfortable. Is also exposed to those hazards commonly associated with work performed on or
    about water.
