A WG-5703-8, MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR:

  • Operates primarily straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 32,000 pounds and/or truck tractors with semitrailers or full trailers to transport personnel or pick up and deliver supplies, materials or equipment.
  • Incumbent couples and uncouples the truck tractor and semitrailer or truck and trailer, and connects and disconnects the airbrakes and electrical lines.
  • Incumbent maneuvers vehicles within close tolerances when driving and backing over uneven ground, in narrow or congested areas, between buildings and other vehicles, between parked aircraft and when positioning vehicles at loading docks.
  • Driver operates vehicles on interstate highways, winding roads, and steep grades and manipulates the dual braking system to prevent the semitrailer or trailer from jackknifing.
  • Assures cargo is properly loaded, distributed and secured.
  • Performs operator maintenance on vehicles.
  • Ensures shipping and accounting documents are with the shipment and reflect actual condition, quantities and type of material.
  • Completes log books, maintenance records, reports and other transportation documents for accurate accounting.
  • May identify, inspect, and segregate equipment or material as it is received for obvious damage and needed repairs.
  • May perform warehouse work to include issuing receiving and inventorying equipment, supplies and materials; loading and unloading of trucks; storing and pulling warehouse stock; packing and unpacking material; and repairing or replacing items on equipment.
  • May select storehouse locations within the general warehousing plan.
  • Operates electric, gasoline or diesel-powered forklift trucks.
  • May perform a variety of extensive servicing and light maintenance work on assigned vehicles.
  • May assist in dispatching vehicles or in the issuance of forms, credit cards or military driver's licenses.
  • Other duties as assigned.(temporary, minor, or incidental tasks)

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS:

Military Grades: SPC (E4) - SFC (E7)

Desired Military Assignments: 88M/91B/91S

- Applicants need not be assigned to the position or possess the MOS to apply or be considered for selection. Selected applicant must be assigned to a compatible Military position and attain MOS within 1 year of appointment action.
- Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
- All soldiers, civilian employees, and contractor employees who drive Army-owned or leased vehicles must complete the Army Avoidance Course (AAC) training when they start working for the Army.
- Must be able to obtain a Government Travel Card (GTC) and be able to attend all schools deemed necessary by the supervisor.
- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Must maintain membership in the WA Army National Guard for continued employment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
- Position requires ability to establish effective professional working relationships with coworkers and customers, contributing to a cooperative working environment and successful accomplishment of the mission.
- May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
- The duties and responsibilities of your job may significantly impact the environment. You are responsible to maintain awareness of your environmental responsibilities as dictated by legal and regulatory requirements, your organization, and its changing mission.
- Must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed (CDL Preferred).
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate SECRET security clearance of the position.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to follow instructions and safely operate the type of equipment required to accomplish the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 12 months experience or training which demonstrates the ability to operate and perform operator maintenance on straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds. Experience demonstrating ability to operate truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers and motor coaches. Experience operating vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow country roads, and on steep winding grades. Experience driving vehicles without mishap in complicated traffic situations.

Education

Education Requirements:High School Diploma or GED.

Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience: Not Applicable.

- Military Technicians in the excepted service will wear the appropriate uniform while performing as a Technician.

- Veteran's preference does not apply to National Guard Technician positions in accordance with Title 32 USC 709 (f).

- May be required to successfully complete a trial period.

****This is an indefinite position. If an individual employed in the excepted civil service accepts this position, he/she will receive an indefinite appointment. If a Reduction-In-Force occurs the indefinite appointee will have no reemployment rights to his/her former position or any other position. If funding level and employee manning levels permit, incumbent may be converted to permanent technician status without further competition. ***

REEMPLOYED ANNUITANT: In accordance with Section 9902(g) of Title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.), annuitants reemployed in the DoD will receive full annuity and salary upon appointment. They will not be eligible for retirement contributions, participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, or a supplemental or redetermined annuity for the reemployment period. Discontinued service retirement annuitants (i.e., retired in accordance with Section 8336(d)(1) or Section8414(b)(1)(A) of Title 5, U.S.C.) appointed to the DoD may elect to be subject to retirement provisions of the new appointment as appropriate.

  • Skill and knowledge to operate vehicles that have limited maneuverability; have more than one body and two breaking systems; or are oversized.
  • Skill to operate these vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow country roads, and on steep winding grades.
  • Knowledgeable about turning the vehicles, in evaluating the condition and load limits of bridges, in scheduling weigh points, and in accessing traffic conditions and hazards, locally and over long-distance routes in unfamiliar geographic areas.
  • Knowledge of warehousing plans and accepted warehousing methods, procedures and techniques.
  • May require normal color vision to differentiate item color codes pertaining to flammability, toxicity and explosivity.
