  • Outline or discuss possible problem areas and defines objectives, plans, priorities, and deadlines; and provides assistance on controversial or unusual situations with no clear precedents.
  • Collect and analyze engineering data and makes sound engineering decisions or compromises for the purpose of operating, optimizing, adjusting, correcting, designing, improving, pollution control, and wastewater treatment.
  • Apply a diversified and integrated knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic, chemical, and industrial engineering technology, principles, and practices.
  • Perform a variety of work relating to the area of specialization that requires the application of a considerable number of different basic but established methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, modification, test, and improvement of industrial facilities, equipment, devices, operations, and processes, some problematic and prototypical in nature.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document.

Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level which includes: 1) Applying engineering principles to assist in the operation and/or maintenance of electro-mechanical systems; 2) Troubleshooting technical problems in electro-mechanical equipment to develop corrective actions; AND 3) Interpreting technical specifications to make modifications of supported equipment.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR

Education: I have successfully completed two years or (i.e., 27 semester hours) of graduate level education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as electrician or electrical engineering tech. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Specialized Experience: I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have more than one year but less than the required education in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
