Duties

This position is located in the Center for Exhibitions and Interpretation (CEI) for the Office of the Librarian and supports the Exhibits Office (EO) as a hybrid Production/AV Specialist position assisting in the development, installation and maintenance of media initiatives for Library of Congress exhibitions as well as exhibit installation and fabrication.

 As the Production/AV Specialist, you will:

  •  Assist the Digital Projects Coordinator with maintaining and troubleshooting AV components in exhibit spaces including maintaining an inventory of AV components and ordering replacement or new supplies as needed. Support the Exhibits Office with reviewing exhibit designs relative to AV components and reviews findings or concerns with the Digital Projects Coordinator and/or Production Officer.
  •  Fabricate conventional exhibit items/structures based on detailed specifications. Utilize knowledge of various materials and techniques that fulfill design and conservation requirements for artifact and object display. 
  • Install various exhibit elements and parts based on detailed specifications. All installations conform to applicable code. Must keep apprised of current artifact conservation techniques as they pertain to exhibit installation. Corrects damaging situations when found or reported. Perform the monitoring of temperature and humidity in various galleries, reporting any significant changes to supervisor. 
  • Perform all phases of surface finishing or applications based on prescribed specifications. Apply finishing materials and uses solvents and adhesives. The finishing materials applied include roller-applied paint, spray paint, brush-on finishes, laminates and textiles. Apply labels, photographs, and artifacts on plaques, panels, walls, bases, pedestals, or in display cases. Perform other duties related to the work of the Exhibits Office and in support of other Library activities as required.
  • Perform routine exhibit maintenance and/or coordinates exhibit maintenance activities. Makes daily checks of the Library’s exhibition spaces. Report major problems to the Team Leader and recommends solutions to the problems identified. Determines required tasks based on established maintenance procedures and guidelines provided by supervisor. Perform regular maintenance, such as cleaning, repairing, and upgrading existing exhibits.

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a Flexitime work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

The work requires some physical exertion such as preparing gallery spaces, including light construction, moving and lifting objects, repair: provides service in cutting and assembling mats and frames.

The work may require special safety precautions and the use of personal protective equipment, such as hard hats, safety glasses, protective masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, or boots.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: After an offer of employment has been made and before commencement of duties, the selectee MUST be physically qualified by the Library’s Health Office. A physical examination is required every three (3) years to perform the work of the position.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.


Knowledge of the development, production, and installation of Audio Visual (AV) media, multimedia, and interactive components of AV media for exhibitions or other public displays.**

Knowledge of the techniques and materials used in the fabrication and installation of exhibit components for museum-quality exhibitions.**

Ability to handle a variety of valuable and sometimes fragile objects using approved museum/conservation techniques.**

Ability to interact collaboratively with others to provide liaison services.

Ability to research and analyze information technology issues and programs as it relates to audio visual media.

Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and machinery and a variety of building and archival materials for the production of exhibit components.

Ability to manage a diverse workload and to work simultaneously on exhibitions and projects with numerous deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Additional information

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid at step one of the grade.
