Duties

Help
  • Provide guidance and technical advise on all matters pertaining to mortuary operations.
  • Adopt new techniques and methods associated with recovery, identification, preparation, and disposition of deceased personnel.
  • Exercise tact, courtesy and sympathy and/or empathy when providing counsel and assistance to next of kin or person authorized to direct disposition.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory Host Nation public health and quarantine guidance.
  • Assign work directly to team members, imposing suspense dates and priorities.
  • Perform allied restorative work, cosmeticizing and other preparatory tasks as necessary in processing a variety of current death cases.
  • Coordinate with military authorities and host nation authorities on such matters as health laws, permits for disinterment of remains, and air transportation to US port of entry or foreign country for final disposition.
  • Prepare remains in accordance with Host Nation and United States standards of embalming regulations and published DOD guidance.

  • This position requires you to be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance of access for the duration of employment which includes a background investigation and credit check.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Emergency-Essential." Emergency-Essential designation takes precedence over any transportation agreement or military recall status. You must be exempt from military recall status.
  • In the event of a crisis situation or wartime, you must continue to perform the duties of the position to ensure the success of combat operations or to support combat essential systems subsequent to mobilization/evacuation order.
  • This position requires Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel approximately 10% of the time away from your permanent duty station.
  • Must be licensed to practice embalming and funeral directing by a state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • This position requires the employee to frequently lift up to 180 pounds as part of a 3 person team (prorated 60 pounds).

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Receiving, identifying, preparing of remains;composing directives, policy memos, SOPs for staff; providing oversight on the planning and directing of funeral services to include transportation of remains; AND coordinating with appropriate authorities on such matters as health laws, permits for disinterment of remains, and air transportation to US port of entry or foreign country for final disposition.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above).

Selective Placement Factor Requirement: Applicants must be licensed to practice embalming and funeral directing by a State, territory, or the District of Columbia. You must identify the certificate/license you hold and the dates it is valid and expires in your resume and/or supplemental data. You will be ineligible for further consideration if you do not meet this requirement.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • Pay retention may be offered to selected applicants for positions at overseas locations. Pay retention will not be offered as an incentive for employees moving between overseas positions.
  • Selectees may receive certain foreign area benefits such as: Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) or government quarters, home leave, etc. Selectees will have their eligibility for foreign area benefits determined at the time of hire in accordance with Department of State Standardized Regulation (DSSR) and DoDI 1400.25 volume 1250.

21st Theater Sustainment Command (TSC)
