Duties

Help
  • Perform a variety of maintenance, repair and operational duties for the park office to which assigned.
  • Maintain and repair equipment such as, hydraulic gates, hoists, hangers, cranes, elevators, sump pumps, water systems pumps, chlorinators and stand-by generators.
  • Inspect circuit breakers and fuses.
  • Weld similar metal components together to fabricate or repair equipment. Use gas welding, brazing or arc welding.
  • Carpentry: Construct, install, repair or modify items and structures.
  • Collect humidity, temperature and wind velocity readings from weather instruments.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and vessels.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Possession of or the ability to acquire the following licenses: a state driver's license; a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license; and a fork lift operator's license.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • Covered under the DA/USACE Random Drug Testing program based upon Dam/Flood Control Operations (USACE Specific Criterion).
  • Subject to pre-employment and regular physical examinations.
  • Required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation ER 1130-2-550, dated 15 November 1996.
  • Positions at Eastman and Hensley Lakes are required to have or be able to acquire a crane truck operator's certificate.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-05: Ability to do the work of a MAINTENANCE WORKER ~ without more than normal supervision. I have experience performing common maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and property under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker who observes tasks in progress and upon completion makes sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-07: Ability to do the work of a MAINTENANCE WORKER ~ without more than normal supervision. I have performed common maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and property under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-08: Ability to do the work of a MAINTENANCE WORKER ~ without more than normal supervision. I have experience as a maintenance worker performing common dam operation, maintenance inspection and repair work on a continuing basis on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and property at park and flood control dam facilities under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker who observes tasks in progress to ensure they are property performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort

  • Uses moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools, equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 pounds to 50 pounds unassisted. Occasionally lifts heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works in cramped quarters, or from ladders, scaffolds or platforms.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
