Duties

Help
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs environmental safety and health inspections in a variety of workplace environments, noting hazardous conditions and unsafe work practices.
  • Conducts regular safety and health-related inspections and checks throughout the facility/campus.
  • Identifies and works to eliminate unsafe and unhealthful environmental conditions discovered as a result of these inspections.
  • Selects, sets up, calibrates, monitors, and reads a wide variety of sampling and measuring devices, and performs workplace/environmental monitoring tasks.
  • Coordinates and manages the disposal of all hazardous waste, such as chemical, biological, and radioactive waste.
  • Enforces federal, state, and USDA APHIS guidelines concerning hazardous waste.
  • Provides instruction and training in various safety and occupational health subjects.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-9 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:

  • Supporting local work unit comply with policies and procedures for a safety, biosafety, occupational health, and respiratory protection program.
  • Assisting safety program staff with investigations of safety and health incidents, complaints and accidents.
  • Participating in inspections of facility safety and occupational health programs.
OR
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
OR
3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • Physical Demands: The work involves frequent surveys and inspections in various environments, which requires regular and recurrent standing, walking, crouching, climbing, and carrying heavy equipment. Travel may be required.
  • Work Environment: Inspection and survey work involves frequent exposure to chemical and biological hazards while in laboratory environments. Protective equipment and clothing may be necessary.
