• Serves as team member as directed by Air Force directives and policies. Responsible to Team Leader and Supervision for all assigned tasks. Maintain, control, checkout, inspect, and properly use and care for assigned tools, vehicles, and equipment.
• Prepares various surfaces of interior and exterior components of buildings and other structures. Performs surface preparation and corrosion removal on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems, components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles by media blasting, mechanical and chemical removal of deteriorated coatings and corrosion, filling cracks, sanding, and applying fillers and base coats.
• Mixes, thins, blends, matches, tints, and tones coating materials used in performing maintenance on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems, components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles.
• Apply coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other specialized methods to include metal spray (metallization) on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems and components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles.

• Will be inspected quarterly by direct observation of certified QA Evaluators on job performance and must meet the requirements for 'Maintenance Evaluation Program (MEP" and Production Inspector (PI).
• Will wear respirators or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as required. Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, formaldehyde or other hazards. Annual occupational health examinations are required.
• Must be able to Qualify with Firearms, such as shotgun training.
• Dispatch to and from LFs and MAFs is required. remain over Night (RON) at a MAF may be required resulting from inclement weather, timelines, and safety reasons.
• Employee must obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance as a condition of employment.
• PRP Position. The employee must be certified under the Nuclear Weapons Personnel Reliability Program IAW DoD Reg 5210.42. This is a PRP Controlled position.
• This position will be designated as a drug testing position IAW AFMAN 44-198, Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. The employee is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug testing as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.


QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4100, Painting and Paperhanging Family, 4102-09 series. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of accepted surface preparation and coating methods and techniques including special finishing techniques;
and paints and thinning additives.
2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of current Federal, state, local, and Air Force regulations pertaining to hazardous waste management.
3. Skill in reading and applying directions that relate to the mixture, use, and application of various kinds of coating materials, solvents, and precoating agents; and tinting, toning, matching, and blending coating materials.
4. Skill in determining the methods, techniques, devices, and materials best suited to obtain the surface condition and finish required.
5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
6. Ability to apply established work methods and procedures to perform limited diagnostic checks and to disassemble, repair, reassemble, and test electrical equipment and components; including electrical testing procedures, AC/DC circuitry, use of electrical test equipment, and multi gas air sampling equipment and procedures.

Physical Effort
The painter prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. The work may be at extreme heights (such as ICBMs). This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, be strapped into swing stages, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Requires lifting, carrying and pulling equipment weighting up to 70 lbs. on a regular basis Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places Must be able to work in confined areas exposed to heights over 90 feet (launcher closure apron walls) using safety harness and lanyards Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds Occasionally, may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 70 pounds.

Working Conditions
The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The technician is sometimes required to prepare, treat, and finish surfaces outside in all types of weather Work is done in areas where hazardous explosives, rocket engine propellant MMH, toxic vapors, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen, Hydrogen Sulfide, lower explosive limit, and fluids Often extreme weather conditions with below zero temperatures, severe winds averaging 50 MPH and wind chills of -30 degrees and temperatures over 1OO degrees F Exposure to Hantavirus (a deadly rodent spread virus), dirt, grease, and various cleaning chemicals Will be often working with exposure to falls of 30 to 90 feet Will often work at heights up to 90 feet in confined areas (Launcher Closure abutment walls) Must comply with missile safety requirements and wear all required safety equipment with each task OSHA, Air Force, base and shop safety directives requires protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are usually heavy and uncomfortable Must comply with TWO
