This is a developmental position with a full performance level of the GS-10.
Serve as the Team Leader, leading a project delivery team for hydrographic, topographic, geodetic and other survey projects, providing daily work assignments to team members, and resolving safety matters.
Plan, schedule, and direct the various phases of the survey such as establishment of horizontal and vertical control and tide gages, preparation and calibration of survey systems, and collection and analysis of data.
Monitor progress and output of acquired data and make continuous cross checks with past physical and environmental data to ensure quality control.
Analyze collected data, such as Before Dredge, After Dredge, Engineering, and similar, for adequacy based on the scope of the project.
Mentor and provide on-the-job training to new employees in accordance to established procedures.
Independently create technical reports explaining objectives and results.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
Incumbent must be able to enter and exit through boat hatches that have a width of 15 in., lifting scientific and surveying equipment that weigh 50 lbs, and sustained physical effort when operating a 20 lbs chainsaw.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
All Army personnel will comply with safety regulations, occupational safety and health standards, and other safety directives and orders.
Incumbent of this position must be enrolled in the Hearing Conservation Program and must undergo pre-employment, annual and pre-termination audiograms.
Incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle; therefore, must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
Work assignments involve working outside, standing, climbing, and walking through rugged terrain.
Incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain a USACE license for the operation of motorboats less than 26 feet.
Incumbent is required to travel up to 75% to perform duties. Travel could be as much as 200 days a year.

NOTE: Specialized experience for the 0817 series is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Conducting surveys to support dredging and other civil works projects; Applying standardized analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to analyze survey data; Utilizing multi-beam sonar systems, single-beam sonar systems, side scan sonar systems, total station systems, global positioning systems, digital level systems, and unmanned aerial and vehicle systems to collect survey data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
