The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Mammoth Cave National Park is Jan-Nov, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: Jan 2027
At the full performance level (GS-05) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Presents curriculum-based education programs for diverse, K-12 school groups. Programs include those associated within or outside the park's boundaries, as part overall education strategy, consistent with school academic standards and park interpretive themes.
Uses appropriate educational methods and techniques, adapts programs as necessary for needs of the audience, and ensures participant safety.
Assists in curriculum-based program development, including planning, researching, writing, and/or modifying activities, materials and interactive learning tools for use with school groups, based on audience characteristics and park themes and priorities.
Trains and directs seasonal park staff, partner staff and volunteers to assist in preparation and presentation of educational programs and activities, engagement of students, and safety.
Organizes, maintains, inventories, replenishes, and coordinates repair of equipment and materials used in presenting education programs.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/02/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements.

Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience could include clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position such as Park Ranger, tour guide, teachers or teacher's aide, or recreation assistant. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR- Education Have completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify, you must submit a copy of your transcripts.
-OR- Combination of education and experience. Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the related coursework required). Physical Demands:Work requires standing for long periods of time, walking long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, climbing and descending numerous steps, bending and lifting moderately heavy items, and crawling and squeezing thru small places. Heights and closed in areas are encountered on most cave tours. Work is also performed indoors which requires periods of sitting. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contact, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of the interpretative programs. Required to operate government vehicles.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in cool, humid cave as well as on the surface, varying greatly in temperature, humidity, etc. from one season to another. Exposure to radon gas results in a controlled exposure rate for safety and health considerations
