Summary

The Telephone Operator position is within the Health Administration Service at the San Juan VA Healthcare System to include several Community Based Outpatient Clinics. The Telephone Operator serves in a critical front-line role to patient and community access. The Telephone Operator manages telephone calls to the facility, to include external calls to the facility as well as internal service to service telephone transfers.

Help

Major duties but are not limited to :

  • Operates the facility s telephone system to manage a full range of incoming and outgoing calls including local long-distance routinely complex priority and emergency calls.
  • Make emergency overhead announcements and reports emergencies to Police Dispatch and supervisor immediately.
  • Uses alternative routing methods when normal switchboard operations fail including conferencing calls when required.
  • Provides veteran-centered customer service including accurate facility directions.
  • Reports telephone system issues or malfunctions to the appropriate personnel for corrective actions.
  • Interviews callers to obtain sufficient information to determine the correct department service line or point of contact to meet the caller s needs.
  • Routes calls accurately based on caller information facility service lines call priority level.
  • Monitor and silence the Patient Assistance Alarm Board and the Medical Gas Alarm System.


Work Schedule: Multiple TODs beginning at 6:00am ending at 12Noon and weekends

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • General Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed 2 years of education above high school. OR,
  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond 2 years of high school. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-04

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
