Summary

The 56th Force Support Squadron is seeking an energetic, customer-focused team member to join the Community Commons team at Luke Air Force Base as a Recreation Assistant.In this role, you will support daily recreation center operations, assist with community programs and family activities, maintain rental gear and recreation equipment, provide first-line customer service, and ensure a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for service members, retirees, and military families.

Duties

Help

As a Recreation Assistant (NF-0189-02) at the Luke AFB Community Commons, typical duties include:

1. Program Support & Customer Care

  • Greets facility patrons, visitors, and active-duty members; answers telephone inquiries; provides information regarding base services, programs, room rentals, and upcoming community events.
  • Conducts facility tours, informs patrons of facility policies and standards, and courteously enforces facility rules.
  • Assists with setup, staging, decorating, and tear-down for recurring and special programs, including single Airman initiatives, family events, seasonal celebrations, retirement activities, tournaments, classes, and private organization gatherings.
  • Recommends new programming ideas, game tournaments, and social events based on patron feedback and emerging recreational interests.
  • Decorates facility spaces according to seasonal themes, holidays, and promotional campaigns.
2. Equipment, Facility Operations & Safety
  • Oversees the issuance, checkout, receipt, and sanitation of recreation equipment, game consoles, board games, and audio/visual gear.
  • Verifies authorized patron status and maintains accountability logs for all borrowed items.
  • Performs routine inspections and basic maintenance of recreational gear, report damaged or broken equipment, and logs repair needs following standard operating procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining clean, orderly, and sanitary common areas, activity spaces, and the Blitz Lounge in compliance with installation public health codes and safety standards.
  • Completes physical monthly inventory counts of supplies, rental property, and retail stock.
3. Cashiering & Administrative Procedures
  • Operates Point of Sale (POS) terminals and NAF automated systems (such as NAFDIS/NAF-T systems, TMX timekeeping, and cashier reporting systems).
  • Collects fees, room deposits, and rental payments; makes correct change, issues receipts, and safeguards assigned cash funds.
  • Prepares daily cashier settlement sheets, reconciles register tapes against physical currency, and compiles end-of-day bank deposit documentation.
  • Assists in tracking facility schedules, entering room reservations, and updating promotional calendars and digital signage.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:

For Recreation Assistant (NF-02 - if multi-grade):

  • Minimum of six (6) months of general or specialized experience working in a structured recreation facility, community center, youth program, or commercial hospitality environment.
  • Practical knowledge of recreational equipment handling, group activity coordination, and computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, manage multiple program activities simultaneously, and oversee room setups and contractor activities with minimal direct supervision.
Core Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Candidates will be evaluated based on the following competencies:
  1. Customer Service & Diplomacy: Skill in dealing courteously and tactfully with diverse patrons, active-duty personnel, retirees, and dependents.
  2. Recreation Operations & Event Setup: Familiarity with recreational activities, equipment rules, room staging, and program execution.
  3. Accountability & Cash Handling: Ability to accurately collect fees, maintain register balances, and safeguard non-appropriated government funds and equipment.
  4. Communication: Ability to express instructions clearly, communicate orally and in writing, and answer facility inquiries effectively.
  5. Computer & System Literacy: Basic computer proficiency to learn automated systems (NAF-T, electronic timekeeping, point of sale, and office software).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
