Duties

Help
  • Direct the day-to-day operations of firefighting crews providing fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous material and emergency medical response.
  • Control operations at the site of any hazardous material spill or incident involving hazardous material.
  • Run comprehensive fire prevention training, safety, and hazardous material handling programs by planning, implementing, reviewing, and evaluating activities.
  • Evaluate performance of subordinate personnel.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires Department of Defense, IFSAC or Pro Board professional certifications for Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander, state and National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Hazardous Material Technician level certification.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
  • This position requires you to wear a uniform and/or wear personal protective equipment as appropriate and complies with safety and health directives (OSHA).
  • Hours of duty: 0645-0645 24-hour tour, six 24-hour shifts per pay period for a total of 144 hours.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. One year of specialized experience which includes: 1. Providing oversight of personnel performing firefighting duties; 2. Directing the placement of firefighting equipment and personnel to ensure maximum utilization in fire control operations; 3. Overseeing fire alarm communication center operations to ensure all firefighting equipment and personnel are dispatch as required; and 4. Performing required maintenance on rescue tools, ground ladders, fire hoses, ropes, harnesses, and hardware to maintain operability. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND aState and National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
