About the Position: As a journeyman Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic, you will diagnose, overhaul, and repair heavy-duty vehicles, engines, electrical systems, and marine vessels for the outside maintenance section at the Oahe Project.
Perform heavy mobile equipment mechanic work including troubleshooting malfunctions, determining the type and extent of repair required, repairing, and maintaining equipment.
Perform automotive mechanic work including troubleshooting malfunctions, determining the type and extent of repair required, repairing, and maintaining vehicles.
Operate, navigate, and is responsible for maintenance of several types of boats and floating equipment.
Remove and repair major systems or components of equipment to include transmissions, starters, generators, carburetors, fuel pumps, braking systems, and steering systems.
Replace and adjust tracks; replace and adjust road wheels, road wheel bearings, idler wheels, idler bearings and oil seals; replace suspension arms, torsion bars, stabilizer bars, etc.
Diagnose and repair all types of failures in electrical systems.
Repair and replace wiring; removes, tests, repairs, and replaces defective assemblies and parts, i.e., line switches, relays, etc.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required prior to starting employment.
Pre-employment physical required.
Participation in the Medical Surveillance Program required.
Pre-Employment drug and alcohol testing required.
This is a random drug and alcohol testing position under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
Must be able to obtain and maintain USACE boat operator's certification within 24 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common journeyman-level diagnostic testing, component replacement, and minor-to-moderate repairs on heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. I can perform routine engine tune-ups, adjust linkages, replace worn parts (such as road wheels, tracks, brake shoes, and starters), and perform minor structural/hull adjustments. I can troubleshoot basic electrical wiring and replace standard fuel components like fuel lines, fuel pumps, or carburetors. I operate vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 26,000 pounds and possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods and requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The mechanic frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 or 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and occasionally outside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work dirty, greasy and noisy, possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools, slipping from work position. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes.
