• Performs daily spore testing and sterilizer control measures as it relates to quality assurance, principles of sterilization and elimination of cross contamination.
• Assembles, adjusts, maintains, and applies the processing procedures for the full range of medical and surgical supplies and equipment used in the hospital.
• Identifies and utilizes substitute instruments and equipment necessary to avoid delay or cancellation of surgery or procedures.
• Receives a full range of reusable medical supplies, instruments and equipment from hospital wards, clinics and operating rooms.
• Decontaminates re-usable items by determining the appropriate method for removing gross contamination (such as blood, tissue, bone) and using equipment such as the ultrasonic cleaner, dryer, and washer decontaminator.
• Assembles a wide variety of instrument trays and sets used for medical and surgical procedures.
• Checks for damaged or missing items and arranges for replacements, maintenance, or repair as needed.
• Operates an automated office information processing system (computer, printer, etc.), to produce, store and process information material to include the daily surgical schedule and the surgeons' preference cards.

• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
• This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assembling medical instrument trays for sterilization process;ensuring compliance of surgical instrument sets and peel packs with relevant regulations and polices; and/or decontaminating a comprehensive range of reusable medical supplies and/or equipment utilized in surgeries or other medical procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
